Soo Kim

I am participating in the job market for the 2024-2025 academic year.

I am currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Notre Dame, and I plan to receive my Ph.D. in Economics from the Department of Economics in May 2025. My research focuses on the intersection of economic development and macroeconomics, with an emphasis on structural transformation, industrialization, and policy evaluation. My Ph.D. advisors are Joseph Kaboski, Benjamin Pugsley and Jasmine Xiao.

My Job Market Paper examines the effect of financial market inefficiency on shaping the path of structural transformation and evaluates industrial policy designed to alleviate financial friction. I develop a multisector growth model with asymmetric technological growth and financial frictions. When calibrated to the United States economy, I find that financial frictions delayed industrialization by 25 years. I further explore the South Korean development episode, showing how well-timed industrial policy can mitigate the negative effects of inefficiency during industrialization.

I am open to opportunities in academic research and teaching, as well as roles in research institutes, economic consulting, and government positions.

Before starting my graduate studies at Notre Dame, I worked as a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant at the Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul. (SKKU). During my Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame, I also served as an Teaching Assistant and Tutorial Instructor for the Department of Economics.
